Earlier this evening, I was reading through a free arts and entertainment newspaper that is published every month in Montreal. It's not just about arts and entertainment though... there are always interesting articles in it about seemingly unrelated topics, one of which is the reason for this post.
I was reading an article written by a lawyer about cars and tips for summer driving, which doesn't really affect me at all since I don't have a car, but one of the headlines caught my attention. It turns out that Montreal is the car theft capital of North America, so the author was giving some advice on how NOT to get your car stolen and tips to make sure that your car is properly insured. I'm getting to the interesting part, so stay with me...
Anyways, the author makes the comment that leaving your car windows open is probably only going to be helpful for the thieves. Yep. THEN he goes on to say that it is also illegal! Huh? Yes, it is true, my friends. In Montreal, it is actually illegal to leave your car windows open or your doors unlocked and it can get you a $42 fine if noticed by police officers. Wow!
According to the article, the author has been told by police officers that, when looking, they can often find dozens of cars per hour with the doors unlocked or the windows open. It just begs the questions "how often do police officers actually issue tickets for such offences?" and "how much money does the City of Montreal make from these all too frequent infractions of a bylaw?"
